With the new NCERT publications still in controversy and the pressure of privatising the entire operation building up within the Government, the NCERT executive committee today decided that a separate unit for publishing and marketing of the textbooks will be set up.

The unit’s responsibility will be ‘‘to ensure quality publication, translation and timely printing of books’’, HRD Ministry officials said. The committee also decided that a regional distribution centre for NCERT books would be set up in Guwahati.

The purpose of this move is to put a check on NCERT director J.S. Rajput whose entire tenure, has been marked by controversies, political squabbles over textbook writing and a State vs Centre debate.
