CHENNAI, November 30: A Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable was placed under suspension on Sunday after he allegedly staged a fast during duty hours to protest against being marked absent on his rest day.

Railway sources said the constable P. Audhi (35), working at RPF post at Southern Railway General Manager’s office, did not report for duty on Saturday as it was a “rest” day for him.

When he reported for duty on Sunday, he noticed that he was marked absent on his rest day. When he enquired with his seniors, he was told that he was asked to come on the rest day due to “emergency” situation.

The sources said the constable, a delegate of RPF Association, maintained that he was not asked to report for duty on his rest day. Upset over being marked absent, he tied a cloth in his mouth and sat on a fast in front of the RPF post at the GM’s office from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m, the sources said.

An inquiry was conducted following which the constable was suspended.
