England’s soccer captain David Beckham and his dad Ted Beckham have fallen out over the star’s decision to move to Spain under a 25-million-pound transfer to Real Madrid and not to invite him for the signing ceremony.
The 53-year-old Ted, who taught young Becks how to play and made him train and hone his skills, wanted his son to stay with Manchester United. But today that seems to count for nothing as Becks sets out to become the world’s first billionaire footballer.
In an interview published in the Sunday Mirror, Ted said: ‘‘My biggest upset was not being invited to his signing. I’m choked really. I’ve been there since day one and that really upset me.
‘‘I’ll never forgive him for that. He could have invited me over and said ‘I’m signing tomorrow’ or whenever it was. That’s what upset me more than anything.’’
Soccer-crazy Ted, who has made no secret of the fact that he wanted Becks to stay with Manchester United, was hoping that David might get a clause in his contract saying that flights for his dad to home matches in Madrid would be paid for. But he knows that’s another dream that has gone up in smoke, the report in the tabloid said.
‘‘I won’t be getting any tickets for Real Madrid matches, that’s for sure,’’ Ted said resignedly. ‘‘I’m a stubborn bastard and so is David. He is exactly the same as I am. Even his agent said he has so much of me in him … Because he’s so stubborn.
‘‘If I say I won’t do something, I won’t — no matter how upset I am or how it hurts me. Unfortunately he’s got a lot of me in him in that respect.’’
Ted publicly blamed the breakdown of his marriage on David’s rise to stardom and accused Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson of stabbing his son in the back.
The bust-up is the last straw in a series of events that has seen Ted — who is recently divorced from David’s mum Sandra — frozen out of his son’s life. And with neither father nor son willing to apologise there seems no prospect of relations improving.
With a raft of money-spinning deals with Adidas, Pepsi, Marks and Spencer, police sunglasses and Castrol Oil, the young ‘‘golden balls’’ — as his wife calls him — has even less time to spend with his father.
In fact, relations between the two have been shaky since the star midfielder married Posh Spice.
The only time Ted got to see his boy was briefly after a home match in the players’ lounge at Old Trafford. Even at the big family pow-wow hosted by Victoria at ‘‘Beckenham Palace’’ last week they exchanged only a few brief words.
The party was to celebrate David’s lucrative transfer and to hear the latest songs Victoria had recorded in America.
