Greater Bombay Police goalkeeper Krishna and a Khalsa Gymkhana player fall on the ground as a GBP defender looks to clear the ball.

July 16: A well-struck free kick by James Fernandes from 25 yards out gave Chembur English a 1-0 win over Centaur in the Mumbai District Football Association-conducted Harwood League match at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel today.

Both teams were playing their first match in the Harwood League and for the 10-strong Chembur English, it couldn’t have been a better start.

Chembur English, who started with just 10 players, played a waiting game. Centaur, an ageing side, did well in the first-half but Chembur English took over after the change of ends. Picking up steam, the Chembur outfit should have added three more to their tally.

The goal came in the 58th minute when James Fernandes’ right-footer hit the bar and entered the goal after rebounding off Centaur goalkeeper Salim’s hands.

The three other chances followed hard work by bustling left-winger Prasad Puthran. The skillful Puthran, after bolting down the left, set up Ashish Nade with a simple ground pass. Nade after turning and running well, however, lost control and the ball rolled free.

Puthran then chased a long cross but his attempt from an acute angle missed the far post by inches with the goalkeeper well beaten.

Centaur defender Norman Fernandes’ languid play then went unpunished after Bhupendra Rana robbed him off the ball before dispatching to Puthran. But the striker’s shot from an acute angle went across the face of goal past a sprawling Salim.
