Security forces foiled a fidayeen attack by killing two militants in the northern township of Sopore on Wednesday, even as the police averted a major tragedy by defusing an IED planted by militants on the busy airport road in the city.

A fortnight after militants stormed a CRPF camp killing five jawans, security forces today prevented a fidayeen attack in this once militant infested town. Two militants and a civilian were killed in exchange of fire when two motorcycle-borne militants tried to storm a Border Security Force (BSF) picket at Hatishah bridge.

Police said two motorcycle-borne militants threw grenades at a security bunker in the afternoon and tried to force their way into the mess of the security camp. However, alert sentries foiled their attempt, killing both of them. One civilian, who according to the police, was forced by the militants to give them a ride, was also killed in the incident.

Muneer Khan, SSP, Baramulla, said, ‘‘One of the three who were killed was identifieed as one Syed Mohammad Fayaz, a medico, who is likely to have been forced by one of the militants to give him a ride across the bridge so as to reach the security camp’’.
