In first gear
The automobile industry is finally coming out of the slump. In April this year, according to the figures provided by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (formerly known as the Association of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), the commercial vehicle segment performed over 25 per cent better, as compared to April 1998 figures.
This was primarily due to the better performance of medium and heavy commercial vehicles — 4,950 units were sold in April 1999, against 2,994 units sold in April 1998.
The passenger car industry performed significantly better as compared to April 1998, and 14,309 more car units were sold — which is a clear 50 per cent increase over April 1998. Two wheelers also saw an increase in sales.
