Victoria State police have notified FINA officials after a small box containing vials of a clear liquid was found in a hotel hosting a number of teams attending the world swimming championships. Police were called to the Parkview Hotel in St. Kilda Road in Melbourne yesterday after hotel staff found the box in the cupboard of a common room at the building, police spokeswoman Stacey Mair said today.

Traces of “illicit drugs” were found in the box, but not in the plastic vials, said Mair, who added that police do not normally test for steroids or performance enhancing drugs. Police contacted FINA and Australian Customs officials after retrieving the box and its contents, but Mair said there was no reason to link the find to FINA or its members at this stage of their investigation.
