On Thursday, the Lucknow University administration will deliver its “final verdict” on the fate of over 200 students who have been booked for disciplinary action. These students have been given a chance to explain and clarify their stand.
So far, about 80 students have filed their replies. A senior faculty member said that of these, over 25 students were liable to be debarred as the explanations furnished by them were not satisfactory to prevent them “from losing their studentship”.
LU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ram Prakash Singh confirmed: “We have started the final exercise. In the first phase, we will a list of students who will be ousted from the varsity.’’ Asked if any sitting office-bearers of the Lucknow University Students’ Union (LUSU) would figure in the list, LU Proctor Dr A N Singh replied: “Let the issuance of the students’ list begin. You will come to know all the students who will be affected by the verdict.’’
The students have been booked under various types of disciplinary cases like assault on teachers, students’ clash, carrying arms illegally, campus vandalism and violent demonstrations.
“Till this evening, about 80 students submitted their clarifications, and we ultimately decided to debar the studentship of around 25 students. In our ongoing screening process to adjudge the authenticity of students’ explanations, many others are likely to face similar action,’’ said an official associated with the V-C’s office.
LU has constituted a committee comprising several varsity teachers from different faculties in order to frame charges against the students.
Meanwhile, the varsity administration has decided to grant some more time to people who have illegally occupied campus land. “We will first make a public announcement asking the unauthorised persons to remove their encroachments from the campus. Thereafter, we will launch an eviction drive,’’ said the Proctor.
“To flush out the illegal residents from the varsity campus and demolish their establishments, we need the help of local civic agencies, district and police administration. The entire process may take a week or so,’’ he added.
