CHANDIGARH, May 27: A fire broke out in the ground floor offices of Max Page, a radio paging service, in Sector 8 today afternoon. No loss of life or injury was reported. Damage to the property is yet to be estimated.
Though the building’s ground floor houses the firm’s showroom and administrative offices, paging services were affected for some time as the smoke-filled building was evacuated. At one time, the paging service was running at half its capacity with the system depending on a back-up power source due to non-availability of electricity.
According to Fire Department officials, the fire, which broke out a few minutes past 4 p.m., resulted from overloading of diesel generators, which resulted in short-circuiting in an air-conditioner.
It is learnt that Fire Department officials had recently inspected the premises of Max Page and warned them against the use of generators. The firm’s officials, however, say that the building does not come under the Fire Act. Six fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes.
