The Headquarters Inspector-General Assam Rifles (South) claimed to have killed one United National Liberation Front militant on Friday during the ongoing operations to reclaim the Samtal area in interior Chandel district — the first casualty in the operations that have been underway since November 18. According to a release from IGAR (S), the militant was killed at Tuitung village early on Friday morning during an encounter with the 10 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, and one AK-47 assault rifle had been recovered from him.

Continuing their progress to reclaim the remaining 60 per cent of the approximately 1,000 sq km Samtal region bordering Myanmar, Army and para-military units have opened the road and freed it of IEDs till Phailen, busted two militant outposts on Friday.
