DERA BASSI, Jan 27: Five persons, including three tourists from Mumbai, were killed and 24 others injured in two separate accidents in the area in the wee hours today.

According to sources, three tourists from Mumbai were killed and four others injured when a Commander jeep, in which they were travelling, had a head-on collision with a truck coming from Ambala near Lalru on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway. The accident took place at 1.30 a.m. while the tourists were returning from Manali after an excursion-cum-religious tour, the police said.

The victims were identified as Abdul Waheed, Abdul Razak Ibrahim and Ismail Ibrahim who died on the spot. The injured were admitted to PGI in Chandigarh where the condition of one of them is stated to be serious. The truck (No. HR03-2585) coming from Ambala collided with a jeep (No. MH-02-K 8246) from Chandigarh, damaging the jeep completely. A case has been registered with the Lalru police and the matter is being investigated.

In another mishap, two bus passengers were killed on the spot and 20 others grievously injured when a Punjab Roadways bus collided with a truck near Roopnagar.

The victims were identified as Karam Singh and Mandeep Singh. One of the injured was admitted to the local hospital, while others were discharged after first aid, the police said.
