Flash floods, landslides leave 5 dead in Jammu

Rain continued to play havoc in Jammu through the weekend. Officials on Monday said three persons, including one woman, were washed away in flash floods triggered by heavy rains on Sunday.

Lakshmi Devi, a woman labourer, was washed away in Nanak Nagar area of the town, while her husband was severely injured when their hut was damaged in the flash floods in Landoi Choi nullah on Sunday night, they said. The body of Lakshmi was later recovered from Chatha area.

Mandaal area but has not been traced so far, they said. Another man Raja Ali was washed away in Sarore area. His body was later recovered.

In a separate incident, a Special Police Officer and a personnel of the Territorial Army were buried alive under a landslide in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Monday.

SPO Mohd Bashir, attached with the Army in operations and Ikhlaq Hussain of Territorial battalion were buried alive during patrolling on Sunday night when rains triggered a landslide in Shallian area of Surankot tehsil of Poonch district, they said.

The members of the patrolling group started search for them and they noticed a boulder collapsed and also spotted a foot of one of the jawan in the debris. After digging, they found both of them buried under the big rock, they said, adding their bodies were taken to the nearby unit and later handed over to their families. Both hail from Poonch district.

Meanwhile, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway reopened on Monday for traffic. “The highway has been reopened for two-way traffic from Srinagar to Jammu,” a source said. The Border Roads Organisation personnel worked to reopen the highway.

The highway was blocked in the Udhampur-Kud sector around 8 am on Sunday following multiple landslides at Samroli, 80 kms from Jammu. Over a 1,000 vehicles, including the Amarnath yatra cavalcade were stranded, sources said. The highway was reopened for one way traffic for brief period around 7 pm on Sunday.
