Foodworld, a major chain of food stores has chosen Pune to tap the markets in the western region in Maharashtra.

A sprawling 30,000 sq feet central distribution centre is coming up in the city which is geared to ultimately handed more than ten to fifteen Foodworld stores.

The first three stores are coming up at Bhandarkar Road, Boat Club Road and Kalyani Nagar. Each of these stores comprises around 3,000 sq feet, offering all the household needs including fresh fruits and vegetables, milk and dairy products and bakery products. A store has been opened at Kondhwa Budhruk.

Foodworld has a technical tie-up with Dairy Farm International, which owns several chains in South East Asia. The first store came up in Chennai in May 1996 and since then there are 29 fully operational stores – 11 in Chennai, 10 in Bangalore and 8 in Hyderabad. Immediate plans include taking the total number of stores to 50 by July 2000 and double the number within the next 18 months.
