Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon will brief Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi about the situation in Sri Lanka on his way back from the island nation.

Menon, who is on his first visit to Lanka after assuming office, will fly from Colombo to Chennai on Saturday to update the DMK chief, who has recently expressed concern about “Tamilians being targeted” in the battle zones. Other politicians in Tamil Nadu have echoed his views.

Today, Menon held discussions with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse. Sources said he conveyed India’s concern over the escalation of violence and the targeting of Tamilians. The Foreign Secretary also urged Lanka to speed up the devolution of power—an expert committee is expected to submit its report on this next month.

Meanwhile, Rajapakse will begin his four-day tour of India on Saturday by travelling to Dehra Dun.
