Whistle-blowing by one Wildlife Institute of India (WII) official has forced authorities to sit up and seek the Environment Ministry’s approval in filling the CBI and CVC on alleged corruption within.

For instance, the faculty reportedly distributed among themselves over

Rs 1 crore as consultancy fee that the WII got from various agencies. ‘‘We have written to the ministry to seek permission for giving details to the CBI and CVC,’’ said WWI Director S. Singhsit.

The Union Ministry woke up to the scandal following a question in Parliament in November, 2002, and issued instructions for recovery of the money.

The forest officer responsible for the action, Mehar Singh, had joined the WII as registrar last year. He reportedly didn’t toe the WII line and was sent packing by then Union Environment Secretary K.C. Mishra (of the Taj corridor fame) in August over anonymous complaints. Singh took his case to the Central Administrative Tribunal and got a stay.
