VADODARA, May 6: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation on Wednesday decided to privatise garbage collection from pakka centres in three areas of the city. The decision, aimed at tackling garbage in an effective manner, was taken in the Standing Committee meeting held under the chairmanship of N V Patel.
Year-long contracts will be awarded to three companies at a total cost of Rs 16.75 lakh. The garbage will be collected from pakka centres located in administrative ward number 1 (A) Lehripura, 5 (E) Shiyabaug and 3 (C) Gajrawadi. Each of the ward offices have at least four to five pakka garbage collection points.
Last monsoon the civic body had awarded garbage collection to private parties and had met with success.
Hence the decision to privatise garbage collection.
Additional City Engineer B S Trapasia told Express Newsline that privatisation would be nearly 25 to 30 per cent cheaper than the work carried out by the VMC.
Also the number of vehicles, which would now be spare, could be utilised in those parts of the city, which faced garbage accumulation problem, he added.
