March 23: Notorious gangster Arun Gawli was produced before Esplanade court on Monday and remanded to police custody till March 30. The underworld don is facing charges of hatching a conspiracy to kill Shiv Sena corporator Kedari Redekar, who was gunned down on March 10.

In its remand application, the Detection Crime Branch, CID, Unit III has said Gawli was produced before different courts in the city on January 1, February 2, 16 and March 2. The application claimed that he had conspired on one of these dates with his associates in the court campus itself to eliminate Redekar.

A case has been registered in N M Joshi Marg police station against Gawli under section 302, 34, 120 (b) of the Indian Penal Code. On March 20, Gawli and his wife Asha were produced before additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Girgaum court, K H Holambe Patil and were remanded to judicial custody till April 2.

The order came after Arun Gawli was remanded to the custody of Malabar Hill police since February 27. He was escortedfrom Amravati jail, where he was been detained for earlier cases.

The Gawli couple was arrested by the police in connection with the murder of city builder Manish Shah on February 5. Redekar, a corporator from ward number 52 at Currey Road, was shot dead by three unidentified assailants near Kamgar Aghadi office while he was getting into his car. The assailants had escaped after the shooting.
