MUMBAI, October 23: Greater Bombay Police (GBP) recovered from a goal down to muscle out Mari Nagar’s challenge 3-1 in a BHA First Division hockey league match at the Khalsa College Gymkhana Ground, today.

The cops came back strongly after Leary Rodrigues put Mari Nagar into the lead against the run of play. GBP drew parity in the 22nd minute through Sandip Jadhav’s goal which took the teams level into the second-half.With no relenting of pressure, GBP took the lead in the 38th minute through Kishore Mohite. The cops then sealed it seven minutes from time through Vinod Chavan.

A sudden switch of action saw Leary Rodrigues deflect home on the quarter hour to put Mari Nagar ahead. It only spurred the cops to intensify their raids and Mari Nagar’s goalkeeper Christopher Fernandes to display his worth. The first of many saves thwarted Devdas Sapkal’s flick from the cops’ first penalty-corner.

Christopher apart, Mari Nagar had scant resources in defence to thwart the cops forever and Tushar Kamble finished a quick move by the indefatigable Mohite with a flick past Christopher to put GBP 2-1 ahead.

A string of penalty-corners did the cops no good but they eventually put the issue beyond doubt in the 63rd minute. Vinod Chavan burst into the circle, drew Christopher out before spanking the boards from an acute angle.

THERISIANS’ TEN: Theresian routed St Joseph’s 10-1 in a Hockey Association of Mumbai (HAM) Fourth Division Rizvi hockey league match at the St Andrew’s High School Ground.

The winners, who led 3-1 at half-time, scored through Lyall Pais, Kevin Vaz , Gavin Aguiar and Avolon Martin (2 each) and Patrick Concessio and Sheldon Fernandes. Diman Kadam scored a consolation for St Joseph’s.
