The prosecutor in the Iftekar Geelani case today surprised everyone in the sessions court by claiming ignorance about the Director General of Military Intelligence’s testimony that documents seized from the Kashmir Times journalist were not classified.

The matter came up during Geelani’s bail application. His counsel V.K. Ohri contested the claim, saying that the DG of Military Intelligence’s testimony had become a part of court records. He urged that the records of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sangita Dhingra Sehgal be called for.

Following the public prosecutor’s submission, Additional Sessions Judge V.P. Vaishya summoned the trial court records and adjourned the hearing on the bail plea till December 26.

Yesterday, Military Intelligence Director General O.S. Locha had been summoned in person along with Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Neeraj Kumar and Home Ministry Under Secretary B.R. Dhiman by the Magistrate. Locha had informed the court that the documents seized from Geelani were published material.

The Magistrate then asked the Government to clarify its stand and submit its report on January 3.

On that day, the court will also hear the arguments on Geelani’s application for discharge.

Ohri said after the proceedings, ‘‘The prosecutor lied in court. As there is no classified document, the case against him does not stand.’’
