Geet Sethi ended India’s campaign in cue sports with a bronze medal in billiards singles here today.

Sethi, who won the silver in the last Games in Bangkok losing to compatriot Ashok Shandilya, wrapped up the third place match in about 25 minutes beating Aung San Oo of Mayanmar 2-0 in the best of three-frames match at the Dongju Stadium.

India finished with a total of three medals including a Gold in snooker doubles by Yasin Merchant and Rafath Habib and a silver by Sethi and Alok Kumar in billiards doubles.

Some hope in tennis

A day after Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi announced their brief reunion with an emphatic victory, Vishal Uppal and Mustafa Ghouse followed their seniors into the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles tennis competition defeating Cheng Wei Jen and Chen Ti of Chinese Taipei 6-1, 6-4. Paes and Sania Mirza reached the mixed doubles second round defeating Japan’s Thomas Shimada and Shinobu Asagoe 6-3, 6-3.

Mongia sails towards a medal

In sailing, India were assured of a silver medal after Nitin Mongia, who was in a gold-medal winning position until the eighth race, was disqualified.

‘‘I had a contact with Korean sailor H C Jin’s boat and he was in the wrong. A jury member gave witness in my favour yet I was disqualified,’’ Mongia alleged.

Ali Qamar crashes out

India’s chances of winning a medal in boxing suffered a serious setback when Commonwealth Games gold medallist Mohammad Ali Qamar went down 11-21 to Harry Tanamor of Philippines at the the Masan Gymnasium. The Indian pugilist could never really recover from the early assault launched by his rival who took a comfortable lead.

After being at the receiving end for most part of the fight, Qamar closed the gap in the last two rounds with a few crisp punches but it came too late in the day to alter the result.

Riders finish fifth

After having won a bronze medal in team eventing, India finished fifth in team dressage in equestrian here today. The team comprising Sunil Shiv Das, Mritunjay Rathore, Vishal Bishnoi and Sandeep Dewan put up a rather dismal show to take the fifth position with a total of 2849 points. While Das was the pick of the Indian performers, Rathore, Bishnoi and Dewan could not show the desired consistency.

Shooters off the target

Shooters ended their campaign failing to qualify for the final round of the last two events of the competition — 25m standard pistol for men and skeet.

At the end of the second round in skeet, Rahoul Rai, Harinder Singh Bedi and Naveen Jindal ended way down the ladder while in the 25m standard pistol, Japal Rana, Ved Prakash and Samresh Jung were nowhere in the contention.
