In an alleged case of medical negligence, a 56-year-old woman was administered blood of wrong group which caused her to slip into a coma. While Nirmala Singh, wife of Hajipur DSP Bijendra Singh, is battling for life, an FIR has been lodged by her son, Sanjay Singh, against Dr Sunil Kumar and Dr P.C. Jha of Satyam Diagnostic Centre for criminal negligence in identification of blood group.

According to the FIR, Nirmala was being treated at the Buddha Hospital and Research Institute in Hanuman Nagar. She was found to be anaemic in an examination and was advised administration of two units of blood.

The identification of blood group was carried out at the Satyam Diagnostic Centre in Kankarbagh, which reported it as B-positive when actually it was A-positive. Nirmala was administered one unit of blood at her residence, following which, her health deteriorated and she went into a coma. She was rushed to the Rajeshwar Hospital on June 11, where doctors diagnosed that her problems resulted from transfusion of wrong blood group.

When contacted, hospital sources said Nirmala is still in coma and there is no sign of improvement in her health. Doctors treating her say her condition is critical since her kidneys have been seriously affected.

‘‘We want action against the doctors so that no one else faces the same treatment from them in the future,’’ said Sanjay.

Dr Jha admitted that it was a ‘‘human error’’ to have wrongly tested the blood group of the patient. He said that the transfusion of blood took place at the patient’s house, with the help of a local technician and without the mandatory cross matching of the recipient’s and donor’s blood.

Police officers investigating the case said they will decide on the sections to be applied only after a thorough investigation.
