AMSTERDAM: Police said today they were investigating an accusation of rape against Dutch soccer international Patrick Kluivert, the 20-year old former Ajax striker who is moving to AC Milan next season. “We are investigating a complaint of rape against four men, one of whom is Kluivert,” Amsterdam police spokesman Klaas Wilting said.

He declined to give further details but said police had not interviewed Kluivert, who is abroad at the moment. The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported today the allegations were made by a 20-year old woman against Kluivert.

Mushtaq Mohammed may coach UAE

ISLAMABAD: Former manager of Pakistan cricket team Mushtaq Mohammad is expected to take over as coach of United Arab Emirates (UAE) team.Mushtaq, who had earlier resigned as the manager of Pakistani team immediately after the Independence Cup in India following differences with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over payment issue, has already left for Dubai to negotiate the contract, according to media report here.

IAAF ratifies Kipketer’s recordsay

MONTE CARLO: Wilson Kipketer’s 800-metre world indoor records were officially ratified by the International Amateur Athletic Federation.Kipketer, a native of Kenya now living in Denmark, obliterated the indoor mark twice at the World Indoor Championships in Paris in March. On March 7, he ran one minute 43.96 seconds, wiping out the old mark of 1:44.84 set in 1989 by Kenyan Paul Ereng. In the finals two days later, Kipketer smashed the record again — this time beating his own time — with a new standard of 1:42.67.

Kipketer, who was kept out of the 1996 Olympics because he lacked Danish citizenship, will run in August for Denmark in the World outdoors in Athens.

Australia score a record win

SYDNEY: Strikers Damian Mori and John Aloisi scored five goals each as Australia overwhelmed the Solomon Islands 13-0 in a World Cup qualifying Oceania group soccer match.

Even Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich got on the scoresheet when he connected from the penalty spot with the last kick of the match yesterday.

It was a record score for Australia in World Cup matches, surpassing the 10-0 drubbing Fiji received in a qualifier in Melbourne in 1981. The lopsided victory maintained Terry Venables’ perfect record in charge of the Socceroos, giving him his sixth win from six matches since he took over from Eddie Thomson at the beginning of the year.
