LONDON, December 18: The 17,000-plus members of the all-male Marylebone Cricket Club, the headquarters of British cricket, will vote in February on whether women should be allowed as members, it was announced yesterday.
The committee, which met at Lord’s this month to discuss the controversial move, sent a report outlining its decision to all members on Tuesday. The last time an attempt was made to introduce female members was in 1991, when Rachael Hayhoe-Flint, a former England women’s captain, was backed by four influential members, but failed to gain the necessary two-thirds majority. It was decided then to raise the matter again in five years.

Salas double gives River Supercup
BUENOS AIRES: Two goals by Chilean striker Mercelo Salas, the second a stunning individual effort, helped Argentina’s River Plate win the South American Supercup.
Salas struck twice in an 11-minute spell early in the second half as the reigning Argentine champions and current league leaders beat Brazil’s Sao Paulo 2-1 in the second leg of the final.
The first game in Brazil had ended in a goalless stalemate best remembered for the horrendous tackle in which River’s Sergi Berti was sent off for kicking an opponent in the genitals as the two went for the ball.
Europe good for Brazilians: Ronaldo
LONDON: Ronaldo was scathing about the attacking skills in European soccer today, but said playing in Europe helped turn Brazilians into all-round players.
In an interview with World Soccer, the Inter Milan striker said both Brazil’s national team and the players benefitted from playing in Europe.“Brazilian players gain added value when they transfer to Europe because, whereas every Brazilian player knows how to go forward, it’s only in Europe that they learn how to defend properly so that they develop into all-round footballers.”
