DHAKA, June 16: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved Bangladesh for One Day Internationals with Test nations, the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced today.

Though Test status was turned down, the promotion to One Day International (ODI) status was another reward for their ICC Trophy win this year. Bangladesh were given two years to improve further before their Test request would be reconsidered. During that time, Bangladesh will be playing Test nations.

Soccer murder

MOSCOW: One of the most prominent women executives in the male-dominated Russian soccer world was fatally shot at her country home outside Moscow, a soccer club said today.

Larisa Nechayeva, director general of the Spartak Soccer Club, widely regarded as the country’s most popular team, was shot in the head and the chest last night at her home East of Moscow, Club spokesman Alexander Lvov said.

The spokesman declined to speculate on the possible motives for the killing, saying Ms Nechayeva had not received any threats.

Chief resigns

KUALA LUMPUR: The executive chairman of the 1998 Commonwealth Games organising committee resigned today after being criticised by two cabinet ministers over preparations for the event.

Retired-general Hashim Mohamed Ali told a news conference he had sent a letter of resignation today to acting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Bed tax row

SYDNEY: Sydney Olympic organisers warned today that a worsening row between city hotels and the State government was putting at risk lucrative sponsorship deals worth several hundred million dollars.

Organising committee vice-president John Coates said potential sponsors would consider walking away because of a lack of guaranteed hotel accommodation during the 2000 Sydney Games.

Major hotels in Sydney have suspended negotiations with Olympic organisers in protest at a proposed 10-percent bed tax on hotel room rates.

Jansher wins

CAIRO: World champion Jansher Khan moved a step closer a successful defence of his Al Ahram International squash title yesterday night when he beat English seventh seed Simon Parke 15-11 15-5 5-15 15-13.
