BONN: Peter Graf, father of Steffi Graf, would go to jail in the next two months for at least a year for millions of marks of tax evasion.Prosecutors and defence lawyers both said they had withdrawn their appeals challenging the verdict against Peter Graf, 58, handed down by a court in Mannheim in January, meaning the sentence is now legally binding.

Prosecutor Horst Kuehner said it would be six to eight weeks before Peter Graf would have to go to prison because of legal formalities.

WI recall Samuels

BRIDGETOWN: Jamaican opener Robert Samuels has been recalled to the West Indies’ squad for the Kingston Test. Left-hander Samuels, overlooked for the recent series against India, replaces Chanderpaul.

Corretja pulls out

BARCELONA: Alex Corretja, ranked seventh on the ATP computer but unseeded for Wimbledon, has pulled out of next week’s All-England Club championship.

“I wouldn’t be 100 per cent fit. I prefer to concentrate on getting ready for the US Open, where I feel I have a better chance,” said the clay-court specialist who has been unable to play for a fortnight with a pulled muscle.

Nicol in final

CAIRO: Third-seeded Peter Nicol of Scotland yesterday dashed Egyptian teenager Ahmed Barada’s hopes of meeting world champion Jansher Khan in the final of the Al-Ahram International Squash Championship when he won a 107-minute match 14-15 15-11 15-12 15-13.

In the second semi-final, Pakistan’s Khan saw off qualifier Alex Gough of Wales 15-11 15-12 15-5.

OJ loses trophies

BEVERLY HILLS: OJ Simpson must give up trophies from his days as a football star and his golf clubs to pay $ 33.5 million for the death of his ex-wife and a friend, a judge ruled yesterday.

Simpson was acquitted of the gruesome double murder but in February lost a civil suit brought by the victims’ families. His 72 trophies are to be auctioned off to raise money to pay the damages.

Capello returns

MILAN: AC Milan yesterday made official the long-rumoured comeback of coach Fabio Capello at the helm of the faltering Italian soccer powerhouse. He will replace Arrigo Sacchi. Terms of the contract weren’t given.

Capello returns to the team that he directed between 1991 to 1996 — winning four Italian League titles in five years — following a single and successful season in Spain with Real Madrid.

Savisevic says no

MILAN: AC Milan’s Montenegrin star-forward Dejan Savicevic has turned down a transfer bid by French club Olympique Marseille.

Ariedo Braida, the general director of the Milan club, said yesterday that Savicevic is available but has the right to approve or reject the bidding teams. “He has refused to go to Marseille,” said Braida.

Souness for Torino

TURIN: Graeme Souness sealed his return to Italian football here yesterday, when he signed a two-year coaching contract with Serie B club Torino.
