
Skate is new Papua New Guinea PM
PORT MORESBY: Papua New Guinea’s parliament today chose Port Morseby Governor Bill Skate as Prime Minister to lead the new government, which will be dominated by the former ruling coalition. The choice is remarkable because Skate had vowed since the June elections that he would not join forces with the former governing coalition.

DHAKA: At least 50 people were missing after a launch capsized in the river Tetulia under Baufal thana of Bangladesh’s southern Patuakhali district on Monday.The launch with 150 passengers on board was on its way from the coastal town of Baragana to southern Barisal town when the accident occurred.

MADRID: Three members of the Basque separatist group ETA were on Monday sentenced to up to 37 years in prison for attempting to murder King Juan Carlos in August 1995, court sources said in Madrid. They had intended to shoot the king while he was vacationing on the island of Majorca, but the plot was uncovered and the three detained, the court was told.
Congo election
YAOUNDE: The presidential election in Congo, scheduled this month, has been postponed due to infighting between President Pascal Lissouba and his rival former President Sasso Unguesso, sources said. Congo’s constitutional council has decided to extend Lissouba’s mandate until a new president is elected.
