PUNE, July 21: She was beautiful, almost my own age, although she looked younger because of her slight height and slender figure. I had had my eye on her for the past two years and we met almost daily, standing near each other many times, but never talking. We met at the bus stop in the morning, met in the bus and then boarded the same bus in the evening, but as many boys are, I was afraid of her or maybe afraid of the fact that there was a mischievous boy inside me which I didn’t want her to meet. On every journey our eyes met a hundred times, but, never for more than a couple of seconds.
It was very clear that she too wanted to talk to me, but neither of us knew how to break the ice. There was everything between us except conversation, which we needed so badly. There was no common friend either who could have introduced us to each other. We needed help and we needed it fast because my studies were getting over in that college and there were only a couple of months left. I knew God would help but I never expected Him to help in such a way.
One Saturday evening we were waiting as usual for the bus to come. The bus-stop was slightly crowded and she was standing quite close to me. We were both very aware of each other’s presence. Suddenly a shabbily dressed man appeared from nowhere, talking to himself. We could make out that he was insane, although he had an innocent look on his face. Both she and I were looking at him as there was nothing to do and nothing else as interesting to look at. He had nothing on but an old torn `dhoti’ which he suddenly tugged with one hand. For a few seconds, there he stood stark naked only about thirty feet away. Then he put his dhoti on and walked away. In sheer astonishment I looked at my silent partner. She was a figure of disbelief with her eyebrows raised in surprise, she caught me looking at her and there was an involuntary smile, which started from our eyes to our lips then to cheeks and broadened to a hearty laughter and that was the first day I ever talked to her, of where she stays, where she studies andeverything else to be asked on a first meeting after two years of friendship, asked questions as though I didn’t know the answers.
To me God had come in all his glory to introduce my love to me. I didn’t see that man after that but, I really owe him a lot. Thank you o stranger!
