Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday charged BJP’s Assam in-charge Pramod Mahajan with engineering the exodus of minority communities from Dibrugarh in the name of evicting Bangladeshi infiltrators.
‘‘This whole conspiracy was hatched by the RSS and implemented by the BJP after its newly-appointed Assam in-charge visited Assam last week,’’ Gogoi said here.
Denying that those who had left Dibrugarh — following a campaign by local NGO Chiringchapori Yuva Mancha — were Bangladeshis, Gogoi asserted they were Indian citizens. While reports claimed the NGO’s campaign led to the exodus of over 2,000 people from the district, the government put the figure at 500.
‘‘I will never allow Mahajan to recreate Godhra in Assam,” Gogoi said, but ruled out any action against the NGO as it had ‘‘unknowingly fallen into the RSS-BJP trap.”
