The high-powered committee constituted by the Government of India to review and reform the working of SAI Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) has formed three separate sub-committees to look into separate areas after its first meeting.
According to sources, the Committee, which met under the chairmanship of UGC vice chairman Mool Chand Sharma, has decided to form separate committees for review of academic programmes, changes in staff and faculty and upgradation of
infrastructure facilities in the NIS.
According to NSNIS
executive director LS Ranawat, the sub-committees would comprise of the 12 members of the GOI high-powered panel and would work separately to recommend changes in the NSNIS to uplift it into a world-class institute.
It is learnt that the
sub-committees and their terms of reference would be finalised within a week, so as to enable them to start work on the
recommendations.
A document — “Vision 2020 for NIS” — was also presented before the GOI Panel, depicting a greater role for the institute in the coming years. Former institute director JS Saini, who is also a member of the Panel made the presentation.
Sources say the Committee is working on ways to suggest introduction of new courses for the sports institute, besides establishing new departments and infrastructure to help restyle the institute as an international sports
and teaching institute.
Incidentally, the GOI had constituted a high-powered panel in January this year to recommend and review changes in academic programmes of NIS Patiala and its sister institutes — NSSC Bangalore and NSEC Kolkata.
Members of the GOI panel include director-general SAI Ratan P Watal, joint secretary of International Sports Division in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Rahul Bhatnagar, Vice Chancellor of LNIPE Maj Gen SN Mukherjee, ronacharya awardee JS Saini, Olympian Ajitpal Singh, former Dean of LNIPE M Robson, physician Sunil Jain, Army Sports Institute commandant Col Satpal Ahlawat, AIU secretary general Dayanand Dongaonkar, Alagappa University Dean AM Moorti and NIS ED LS Ranawat.
