A group of ministers (GoM) will examine the proposal to exempt Central paramilitary forces personnel from the new contributory pension scheme. The proposal from the Union home ministry at the request of paramilitary forces had sought to exempt paramilitary personnel from the scheme that is in place for employees joining service after 1 January 2004.
But the finance and defence ministries are learnt to have opposed the proposal. The defence ministry is believed to have argued that putting paramilitary personnel on par with the Army would have a demoralising effect on the latter. According to home ministry sources, the finance ministry objected on the ground that it would place an additional financial burden on the government. Accepting the move could also lead to similar requests from other sections of central government employees, it is learnt to have pointed out.
The GoM that will now look at the matter will be constituted at a later date.
