NEW DELHI, July 31: National champion and World No 34 P Gopi Chand will have more than just big-match pressure to contend with as he prepares for the World Cup Badminton Championships to be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from August 20-24.
India’s lone invitee in the premier competition will also have to cope with a new set of rules, including a new points system in the tie-break, a 90-second break between every game and a new dress code.
Disclosing this when contacted in Kuala Lumpur today, Punch Gunalan, secretary general of the Asian Badminton Confederation, (ABC) and council member of the International Badminton Federation (IBF), added, “The IBF will enforce this new system in this World Cup to popularise the game with a commercial interest.”
Coming to the changes in points system, Gunalan explained that there will be no deuce at 13-13, and at 14-14 the players will be given a choice of either a one point `shootout’ or `best of three’ play-off. Besides, in a 15-point match, there will be a break of 90 seconds after eight points, while in a 11-point match (for women) the break, of the same duration, will be after six points, he said.
Significantly, the IBF will allow coaches to sit on the sidelines, and impart tips to their wards during the 90-second break. Coloured clothing is another measure designed to make the game attractive, especially for television viewers.
While emphasising the significance of this development, Gunalan said the IBF is eagerly awaiting the response to this move, from players and, more importantly, the public. “The IBF realises that response is important, and that will be a crucial factor,” he said.
However, Gunalan, the All-England doubles champion in 1971 and the singles runner-up in 1974, said that the ABC has refused to adopt the European experiment with best of five nine-point games, as in squash.Rule changes
