
BANGALORE, July 22: Showing no effects of the knee injury which had kept him out of the Asian Satellite Badminton Tournament Chennai, top seed Pulela Gopi Chand of Indian Oil Corporation successfully defended his title, getting the better of third seed Nikhil Kanetkar in straight games 15-7, 15-9 to win the BPL all-India Open Badminton Title at the Karnataka Badminton Association courts, here on Wednesday.
Aparna Popat reigned supreme in the women’s section as she easily quelled the challenge of Andhra Pradesh’s Neelima Choudhary 11-1, 11-5 to record her third successive title triumph.
Aparna picked up a whopping Rs 30,000 considering the fact that she was hardly stretched. She won in just 15 minutes. Gopi Chand was richer by Rs 45,000. The runners-up received Rs 20,000 each.
The doubles pair of Jaseel P Ismail (IOC) and Vincent Lobo (BPCL) had to sweat it out against George Thomas (BPCL) and Markose Bristow (IOC) to claim the men’s doubles honours. They won 15-6, 14-18, 15-8.
In the women’s doubles,Manjusha Kanwar (IOC) and Archana Deodhar (BPCL) overcame the Karnataka’s pair of Aparna Popat and Manju T Abraham 17-14, 15-12 to clinch the title.
