Hyderabad, July 10: National champion Pullela Gopichand is the lone Indian entry for the World Cup Badminton to be held from August 20 to 24 at Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The top 16 players in the world will feature in this prestigious tournament to which each country can send two entries. Gopichand, ranked 34th in world, has been invited by the International Badminton Federation for this tournament. He will leave for Bangalore tomorrow for a month’s workout at the BPL Academy before embarking for Indonesia.

This time the modest shuttler is taking no chances with his fitness programme. He has been practising at the Lal Bahadur Indoor Stadium for the last couple of days.

It may be recalled he suffered an injury to his leg in the Sudiraman Cup in Ireland in May which forced him to withdraw from the individual championship.“It was indeed a setback but I have overcome it. Hopefully, I will put up a good performance,” said Gopichand to The Indian Express.

This will be the second time that Gopichand will be taking part in the World Cup. Earlier, he got a entry in the Delhi championship in 1993 as a host country player.
