New Delhi, Oct 6: High-profile BJP General Secretary K N Govindacharya has been embroiled in a controversy. An article by a former editor of Panchjanya (the RSS mouthpiece) reported today that he had described Atal Behari Vajpayee as “merely a loudspeaker” and that it was BJP president L K Advani who was and would remain the real leader of the BJP.

In an article in a Hindi daily today, Bhanu Pratap Shukla who was editor of Panchjanya, reported that Govindacharya made this statement to two high-ranking officials of the British High Commission. Govindacharya was also reported to have said that he alone represented the RSS in the BJP and that Khushabhau Thakre would be the next BJP president.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Govindacharya described the report as far from the truth. While admitting that he had met the two officials from the British High Commission, he said that the statements attributed to him were not in keeping with the spirit of his conversation. Govindacharya, who is known to be close to Advani, was also reported to have told the British officials that the BJP was promoting the swadeshi concept for purely political reasons.
