CHENNAI, July 18: Gopal, the editor of a Tamil magazine Nakkeran, whose help has been sought by the Tamil Nadu Government in contacting sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, has said the Government must spell out in precise terms the offer being made to Veerappan.

Gopal said the Government should come out with its terms, since Veerappan had clearly spelt out the conditions for his surrender.

According to indications so far, it seemed that the State Government would merely guarantee Veerappan’s life while the cases against him would be pursued, said Gopal, who was roped in to negotiate the modalities of the surrender.

Such an approach went against Veerappan’s firm stand on general amnesty, said Gopal, adding that he, therefore, required a clear message from the Tamil Nadu Government on its specific offer to the smuggler. “If that comes, then I will try to establish contact with Veerappan…I must know what I will have to convey to him. Otherwise, there is no point in carrying out this exercise,” he said.

According to the editor, the Karnataka police was earlier on the look-out for him and his associate, Sivasubramaniam. Six cases were reportedly registered against them in Karnataka as they were wanted as witnesses in 55 cases relating to Veerappan.

However, Gopal said he had obtained a stay in the Bangalore City Civil Court against being produced before the court in connection with these cases.
