The centre has formed a Government Industry Council for promoting rural business hubs to generate income and employment at the village level, Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar said today.

After a CII meeting on the subject, Aiyar said he would co-chair the Rural Business Hub Council with industrialist Sunil Kant Munjal. These hubs will be based on local resource endowments.

The pilot project will be launched in Punjab, Uttaranchal, Kerala, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, UP, Chhattisgarh and J-K.

“Each block will tell us one produce they wish to industralise and commercialise through rurual business hub,” Aiyar said.

The hub council will initially focus on processing agricultural produce, handlooms and handicrafts, decentralised power generation and alternative fuels. NABARD will be asked to finance the project. The working committee will be chaired by Panchayati Raj Secretary W Habibullah and the CII’s S Sen.
