Uttaranchal Government, jointly with the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has launched an ambitious Rs 7.35 crore ‘Jan Shree’ scheme for the people living below poverty line (BPL) in the state. Launching the scheme on Saturday, Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari said his government has contributed Rs 3.76 crore, while the rest of the money would be pooled by the LIC annually. Tiwari also distributed cheques of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 to nearly 51 persons from economically backward families here. The government has already identified 3.76 lakh families, who are living below poverty line. This is the first such scheme in the country, Tiwari said. Under the scheme, LIC would pay Rs 20,000 in case of the death of a head of such families. pti
