The unduly sharp attack by the Swadeshi Jagran Manch on the economic policies of the A.B. Vajpayee Government here yesterday has shattered the ceasefire brokered by the RSS between the BJP and its belligerent affiliates.

Though RSS spokesman Ram Madhav maintained that Parivar organisations were only required to avoid a personal criticism and were free to articulate their views on issues, policies, and governance, the allusions to Jaichands and Mir Jafars by SJM founder Dattopant Thengadi had left the Government stumped.

‘‘The leadership is obviously hurt over such comparisons,’’ official sources said here today, pointing out that these ‘‘raised a question mark over the personal integrity of people at top.’’

Despite being upset over such ‘‘uncharitable’’ references, the Government still wants peace and hopes that the RSS Nagpur Pratinidhi Sabha resolve to demonstrate a unity of purpose by the Parivar may hold.

Official sources offered to have a dialogue with the SJM. ‘‘It would be ideal if we sat across the table and discussed all issues,’’ sources said, underlining that ‘‘it would be worth a try even if we ultimately agree to disagree.’’
