The Urban Development Ministry has proposed the reopening of four India Presses in various parts of the country, which had been closed down by the previous NDA government after they ran up huge losses.
Two of the India Presses that the UPA Government is considering reopening are the Government of India Forms Store and Office of the Assistant Director (Outside Printing) in Kolkata. The other two are the Government of India Presses in Shimla and Gangtok.
The NDA government had decided to shut down the presses in September 2002. While of four of them were ultimately shut, five of them were merged.
Three other textbook presses under the Urban Development Ministry in Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar and Mysore were transferred to the states with the clause that if they did not accept them by 2003, they too would be shut.
The Cabinet note on reopening the presses has been circulated among the ministries concerned for comments. Sources said there have been several representations from the state governments to revive the printing presses.
