CHANDIGARH, July 30: The UT Education Department has, in a recent communication to the Engineering Department, sent in their requirement pertaining to extension of existing buildings and construction of additional classrooms in most of the government schools in the city and the nearby rural areas and colonies.
Under Secretary Education cum DPI (Schools) D.S. Mangat said that this forms a part of their tasks mentioned in the priority list, which have to be undertaken during the current year for improving the infrastructure in these schools.
The work in most of the schools pertains to the extension of buildings. Sources reveal that while schools are upgraded from time to time, no additional rooms are provided which subsequently creates accommodation problems. While Government Middle School No. 4, Industrial Area requires extension of building, GMS-Sector 26 needs extension of building as well as eight new classrooms. GMHS-29 also needs addition of a new wing to the existing building.
According to the priority list, the schools in which construction work has to be undertaken include GHS-Palsora; GMSSS-20-D whose building is to be constructed in 20-A. In GMHS-41, an approach road has to be made. A boundary wall around the nursery wing has to be constructed in GMSSS-19, while in GHS-7, GHS-37-C and GMHS-43 the existing boundary wall has to be raised.
However, the main requirement remains the addition of classrooms in the senior secondary schools. Among the rural schools, GHS-Dadu Majra needs 11 classrooms, 4 rooms and a chowkidar quarter, GHS-Kajheri has a requirement of 10 classrooms and a few toilets; GHS-Lahora needs 7 new classrooms.
In case of urban schools, GMHS-28 needs 6 class rooms and one staff room. GHS-11 requires a full block; GMHS-26 needs 4 classrooms, a science lab and Home Science Lab and GMSSS-16 needs a biology lab. The requirement of GSSS-47 is 4 rooms, two nursery rooms and an approach road. GMSSS-10 needs 4 rooms and replacement of old ceiling fans. GSSS-45 is also to be provided with ceilings fans and security lights. GMHS-36 also needs laboratories and a new wing.
GMSSS-35, which has a fairly large number of students, needs an extension and the rough estimate costs for the same have already been received.
