The Centre tonight decided to amend the Foreigners’ Act to make the punishment for travelling with forged passports more stringent.
The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, approved a proposal for amending the Foreigners Act, 1946. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj disclosed after the meeting that a Bill for the purpose will be introduced during the current session of Parliament.

The imprisonment for travelling with forged passports would be consequently extended from two to eight years, while the fine would range between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000.
