NEW DELHI, Aug 10: The government will reduce the scope of “bribe-taking and bribe-giving” and “ruthlessly” deal with corruption cases, the Prime Minister, I K Gujral asserted.
In an interview to Times of Oman, he said the government was working toward making its functioning transparent and would be setting up a “transparent high level body for clearing large purchases”.
Pointing out that the country has grown bigger and so has the scope of its problems including graft, the PM nevertheless assured a redefinition of the value system in public life.
On whether the economic reforms and opening of Indian markets came too late, Gujral replied in the affirmative but said that policies reflect the economic realities at the ground level as well as the received wisdom at a particular time.
