Concerned over the reports of corruption against a top official of the Medical Council of India, a parliamentary committee has asked the Government to streamline the working of statutory body that regulates medical education in the country.
The estimates committee of Parliament in a note said that it is not happy with the state of affairs in the Medical Council of India. It also said that even after such glaring instances, no steps have been taken by the Government to streamline the working of MCI and to put the house in order. ‘‘The committee noted that the high court of Delhi had pointed out several irregularities in the style of functioning of the president of MCI…There were also corruption charges against him,’’ the committee said.
The committee asked the Government to take corrective measures to ensure more transparency in the functioning of the council. It also recommended the Government to create a post of chief vigilance officer and a public grievances redressal cell to check corruption in the MCI.
