Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis will lead a pack of around 6,000 Greek fans travelling to Portugal to support their national side in Sunday’s Euro 2004 final against hosts Portugal.

Karamanlis will depart for Portugal tomorrow, said Christos Valtadoros, press aide to the Prime Minister.

A fleet of up to 60 planes will be chartered to carry the fans to Lisbon. They will join as many as 10,000 Greek supporters already in Portugal.

And after facing a barrage of criticism on Athens’ preparations to host the upcoming (August) Olympics, Games’ organisers said today the football team’s success boosted their own confidence and improved the nation’s image.
