AHMEDABAD, APRIL 5: Gujarat has made rapid strides in respect of industrial pollution control compared to many other states in the country due to the adoption of waste minimisation and other cleaner technologies by industries, said Ratanprakash Gupta, vice-president, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

In a statement here today, Gupta said that according to the latest data of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), out of 1,551 large and medium industries in the country in 17 categories of highly polluting industries, 1,260 industries have installed the requisite pollution control facilities for complying with stipulated environmental standards, 141 industries have closed down and 130 units were declared defaulters as they were not having adequate facilities to comply with the standards of pollution control.

He pointed out that the statewise profile of status of polluting industries revealed that Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have the largest number of industries having installed the requisite facilities. Statewise status of pollution control in 17 categories of highly polluting industries indicated that in Gujarat, out of 177 highly polluting industries, 167 units have set up pollution control facilities, whereas four units were closed and six units were declared defaulters. As against this, in Maharashtra, out of 335 highly polluting industries, 296 units have set up adequate pollution control facilities, whereas 21 units were closed and 18 units were declared defaulters.

However, in respect of Tamil Nadu, Gupta said, out of 119 highly polluting industries, 116 units have adequate pollution control facilities, two units were closed whereas one unit was declared defaulter. He said analysis further indicated that Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh have the highest number of defaulting industries whereas Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have maximum closed units.
