This municipal school in Junagadh shot to fame after the HSC (Science) results were announced on Monday with two students bagging ranks three and nine in the state. And eight of the 10 students in the district list are also from this school.
Students of Swami Vivekanand Vinay Mandir (SVVM) School have surprised everyone with their performance in the last few years. This year, the overall board result is 42 per cent and if admission for medical closes at 380 marks, as it is expected, 48 students from this school will qualify for medical courses.
For the last five years, eight of 10 top HSC positions in Junagadh district have been bagged by SVVM students. Since 1995, except 2001, every year at least one student has made it to the state list. Every year, as many as 40 students from here get admission in medical or engineering courses.
Biology teacher A.D. Markana said: ‘‘The standards in Junagadh were never great. So the school management and teachers decided to create a model school for students here.’’ Principal Vinubhai Sinhar attributes the success to regular tests held so that students don’t forget lessons.
‘‘Though 70 per cent attendance is necessary, Science students are not forced to attend optional subjects,’’ said Sinhar. Teachers also help students form their study pattern. ‘‘We emphasis on regular studies, at least six to seven hours,’’ said Sinhar.
The school also organises seminars by academicians and psychiatrists. Junagadh District Collector Rohit Pathak regularly visits the school. He added: ‘‘Next on the agenda is computer education. From next year, we will introduce computers so that students are not deprived of it.’’
