Admitting irregularities in the selection of Haj assistants, the state government has instructed the concerned departments to ensure that all those eligible employees who were not included this year are given preference next year.

This follows a report in The Indian Express last month on how people with bureaucratic or political clout were chosen as Haj assistants at the cost of eligible government employees.

The HC had asked Chief Secy S.S. Bloeria to probe the matter. Bloeria admitted the officials had overlooked the eligibility criteria in order to accommodate their own relatives. He told his additional secretary to write to the Divisional Commissioners in Kashmir and Jammu as well as Secretary, Revenue Department, to ensure at least one employee from each district was deputed for Haj duty from now on.
