Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has said it is not using ‘‘any spurious spares’’ in MiG fighter aircraft which could be blamed as the cause for a series of accidents of the Russian plane.

‘‘I am not putting any spurious spares which is the cause of the accident,’’ HAL chairman N.R. Mohanty said on the sidelines of the Aero-India 2003 Air show after a MiG top official pointed the needle of suspicion for the crashes at spurious parts from uncertified sources.

The crashes could not be only because of spares, Mohanty said. The causes could be human error, bird strikes or maintenance problems, he said, adding: ‘‘Everything that goes into the aircraft is inspected’’.

Giving a clean chit to HAL, first deputy general designer-director of Engineering Center of MiG Corporation, Vladimir I. Barkovsky, said HAL was using ‘‘professionally’’ those spares for which it had license for production. He said his comments on spares had been ‘‘taken out of context’’ by the media.
