MUMBAI, October 5: League matches of the newly formed Hockey Association of Mumbai kicked of today at the St Andrew’s School Ground, Bandra, today.

In the first match of the day for Division IV A, Orlem Sports Centre thrashed Somland 8-0. Lloyd Rodrigues scored in the very first minute, setting the ball rolling for Orlem. Dominic D’Souza scored the second goal taking the score 2-0 into half-time.

Among the other goal scorers were Dawson Gomes (2), Lloyd Rodrigues (1), Glen D’Sa (1) and Agnelo D’Costa (1).

In the second match of the day, Rizvi Sports Club beat Dolours XI 6-1. Hassanji Choudhary and Allen Fernandes scored a brace each. Savio Furtado and Lawrence Noronha netted a one each. Savio Fernandes scored the lone goal for Dolours.

Chembur English prevail

A late second-half goal by Napolean Pereira saw Chembur English pip All Parsees Sports Club, 4-3, in the Harwood league match of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA) at the St Xavier’s Ground, Parel, today. Luck favoured Chembur English who got two of their goals through penalty shots.

The first of the two came in the 10th minute when Porus Guzdar was found guilty of dangerous play by referee SF Rodrigues who showed him a red card. Anthony Marian made no mistake in converting the penalty shot.

But Parsees were not to be held down when they struck in the very next minute. Fareez Vasania scored the equaliser off a fine pass by Ardeshir Jeejebhoy.

Parsees took the lead midway through the first-half. Fareez Vasania was again the scorer for the Parsees. While the blue brigade were doing well in holding on to their lead when in the 30th minute Chembur English earned their second penalty. In a repeat performance, Anthony Marian netted the ball again to catch up with the Parsees on the board.

Marshall Aleckel, star of the Chembur team’s victory over Rhino, was back in action today, scoring the third goal, minutes before the breather.

The cat and mouse game continued in the second session. Fareez Vasania was instrumental in this goal too, coming up with a fine pass to Adil Robinson who made no mistake in crashing it into the net. However Napolean Pereira struck minutes before the final whistle to turn the match in the Chembur team’s favour.

MLWB Andheri (Britacel) 7 (Sharnal D’Souza 2, Sheldon Fernandes 1, Ralphson David 1, Sheldon Nunes 1) beat Shishu Vikas 0; Young Rangers 4 (Melbro Menezes 2, Randolph Lobo 1, Roy D’Mello 1) bt Borivlians 1 (Noel Nunes).
