Hayden is past his use-by date: Thomson

Pace legend Jeff Thomson said he would have sacked the opener had he been Australian cricket team selector.

Asserting that Matthew Hayden was past his ‘use-by date’, pace legend Jeff Thomson on Wednesday said he would have sacked the embattled opener had he been in the Australian cricket team’s selection panel.

“Matty is a friend and while I’ve got nothing against him, I do think he’s past his use-by date,” the legendary pacer, who took 200-Test wickets, was quoted as saying by ‘The Daily Telegraph’.

Thomson said even if Hayden gets back him form after being given chance after chance, it doesn’t help the team in any way.

“He doesn’t look in good form to me. If he keeps playing long enough he’ll start scoring runs again, but what does that prove?” he asked.

Hayden has been struggling to find form all through the season and with pressure building up on him, speculation is rife that he might hang his gloves after the three-Test series against South Africa.
